He stopped. They forget, in the middle sometimes, that the one they'd have you tell is on this side now, or gone on ahead of them. He didn't finish it. He came back to his one thing, circling, the way they do.

"It wasn't the money," he said again, quieter, near done now. "That's the whole of it. That's all I come to say."

I don't know what the son said back to that. I'll set it down plain: I don't know. I had the cord in my right hand and I felt it go cool against my palm, and then colder, the way a stove-lid goes cold when the fire's been out a good while and you'd thought it still holding heat. A cold that comes up into your hand instead of off it. That's how they ring off. Not a click. The wire just quits having a person in it, and the cord tells your hand of it before your ear knows, and Alton Gann, that I'd not known was dead till his light came up on the third row, went the rest of the way gone.

There was the shape of a word from the son's end, and not the word, like you'll hear a man's grief and not the letters of it. I didn't lean in after the rest. It wasn't mine to catch. What he did with it was his to do, out past the church where the road quit, in a dark kitchen with the receiver still to his ear and nothing on the line now but me at my board a valley off, and a switchboard operator is no one at all to a man in that place.

I pulled the back cord. I pulled the front. The son's line I left up half a breath past when I needed to, in case there was a thing he wanted to say into it that a dead line would take as well as a live one, and then I pulled that too, and the board went dark down the second row and quiet.

The third-row jack sat where it always sat, dark, wired to nothing, cooling now the way it always cooled after, a little further down than it had started. I didn't put my hand to it. There's a jack I keep dark on purpose and I keep my hand off it most nights, and this was one of the nights I kept my hand off.
